History and information on Tamworth, Mt. Washington Valley

June 24, 2018 By Peter Warren

Tamworth and the Mt. Washington Valley have a rich history and have been a mecca for outdoor enthusiast for centuries. In Tamworth, by 1928 tourism had taken over as the primary industry and Grover Cleveland had purchased a summer home in Tamworth. Francis Cleveland, Grover’s son, who had recently graduated from Harvard, founded the “Barnstormers” Summer Theater in the barn. The theater is now the oldest “Actors Equity” house in the U.S.

The Bretton Woods Convention July 22, 1944 – which created the International Monetary Fund, World Bank and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (as a customs lawyer this holds a special place in my heart)  – was signed in the “Gold Room” at the Mt. Washington Hotel.  The hotel is one of the remainnig Grand Hotels of a bygone era, and offers historical tours of the hotel, and the Gold Room.  You may even see chipmunks sitting in the chairs of world leaders when you go!   For a great historical reference, read: How Capitalism Saved America: The Untold History of Our Country, from the Pilgrims to the Present
Mt. Washington Valley provides a historical experience for kids.  The Kidcations article highlights some of the historical and educational opportunities available in the valley.

There are numerous histories of the area, White Mountains school of painters, genealogy and more available.

Cheap Shopping in Japan

April 30, 2017 By Peter Warren

Find It All and Have Fun Doing It At the Don Quijote. For a cheap, all-encompassing shopping experience in Japan head to the nearest Don Quijote. Named after Cervantes’s famed adventurer, it is really a place where you can find almost anything. Whether you’re looking for things to furnish and decorate your home, stock up the pantry, increase the size of your wardrobe, or buy the latest gadget, Don Ki (as it’s called in Japan) is the place to go.

It’s a bit like a Japanese Wal-Mart; you can get such a wide range of items- from groceries to alcohol to electronics to shoes to medicine- and you can find it all under one roof. Yet Don Quijote may prove to be a bit more interesting and memorable an experience than the American mega-chain.

First of all, Don Quijotes are all several stories high. Like a lot of things in Tokyo- shops, restaurants, salons, etc., you may have to look upwardly and not vertically to find what you’re looking for. It’s like taking Wal-Mart and squeezing it in and up. And some of the purchases you find here you may not find in the American chain- from cheap Japanese souvenirs, kimono, designer hand bags and watches to pet clothes, herbal aphrodisiacs and sex toys. Not to mention the wide array of Japanese anime and other costumes (young people love their “cos-play,” as they call it) on offer.…

Details Of Your Stationery

March 30, 2017 By Peter Warren

Your wedding invitation is very important. Most experts will tell you that the invitations will set the tone of your wedding. It also gives the first impression of your big day to your guests. To this end you will try your best to make your wedding invitation really special and unique. However, there are also other items that will come with your wedding invitation and you should also pay attention to all these items so that your wedding card can be a really special one.

The first thing that should be talked about is the save the date card. In fact, you do not send the save the date with your wedding invitation. You are sending it long before you send your invitations. You are sending the card to your guests so that they will arrange beforehand if they are planning to attend to your event. Yet you may not need to send a physical save the date card to your guests. Some couples will send an email to inform their guests about the wedding instead of sending a physical card to them. Of course sending an email will help to save some money.

When you send your wedding invitation, you will probably put a respond card together with the invitation card. As from the name respond card, you will probably know the use of it. It is for your guests to reply if they will attend your wedding or not. Return address will usually be printed on envelop of the respond card. Some couples will design their respond card in a way that it is like a post card. In this case envelops will not be needed. …

Field Trip to Carter Mountain Orchard

November 11, 2016 By Peter Warren

On Friday Claire attended her first field trip. Her class headed up to Carter Mountain Orchard for some apple-picking fun. Julia and I joined them, and Julia was so excited to see her big sister. There were a lot of kids there; I guess its a popular day for field trips. We saw buses not just from Charlottesville and Albemarle County, but also Fluvanna, Louisa and even Goochland.

Claire picked out her cute little flannel and fall-colored corker bows to wear. I loved how cute she was! It was Julia’s first visit to Carter Mountain where she could enjoy the cider and donuts. Little pumpkin was a wee babe when we went last year

1. This year she seemed to be making up for lost time because she guzzled her cider and scarfed down her donut, plus half of Claire’s. Other children in the class, who were quite taken with their little visitor, offered her pieces of their donuts. I had to physically remove her from their presence so she’d stop gobbling them down. I get it, kid; those donuts are ambrosia. But they’re also deep fat fried and coated in sugar, so let’s give your infant arteries a rest.

The kids got to attend “apple school” where they learned about apple trees through the seasons and the harvesting of apples. Afterward, they were each given a bag and got to pick their very own apples. The kids had a great time; even Julia got in on the apple-picking action. I hadn’t realized Carter Mountain had done away with the wagons, so I ended up hauling Julia – who has gotten pretty heavy I realized – up and down the mountain. It’s okay; I needed to burn that donut off. It was a great way to spend the midmorning, and I know Julia was delighted to spend time with her big sister during school hours. We’re going to Carter Mountain this weekend for our 5th annual apple picking excursion. So excited!…

Honeymoon Destination

June 16, 2016 By Peter Warren

There is no doubt that it is quite stressful to plan for a wedding. And you should try to take the opportunity of the honeymoon to take a break. You can enjoy the time of being together with your spouse. It is your first trip with your spouse as a married couple at the end of the day.

So the question here is, which destination will be good for your honeymoon. In fact, there is no definite answer to this question. It will depend on your preference, as well as your lifestyle. If you are someone who does not really like outdoor activities, a honeymoon with sunshine and beach may not really suit you. On the other hand, if you are really the kind of person who loves outdoor activities very much, it will not be really suitable for you to have a honeymoon in a place with shopping as the main activity.

As a matter of fact, you can just choose your honeymoon destination by your preference. Of course you also have to consider your budget. It can be very romantic for you to have a honeymoon in Antarctica. However, you will certainly go for other options if a trip to Antarctica is totally out of your budget. It is always a good idea to work with your budget and there is no point to make anything out of the budget.

If you are planning to have a honeymoon with a lot of sunshine and beach, you can consider some South East Asia destinations such as Thailand and Indonesia. They are certainly famous for the beaches. This is especially true for places such as Phuket and Bali. You can really enjoy the sunshine and relax for a whole day on a beach. The beach resorts there are certainly excellent and perfect for you honeymoon.

If you would like to see the cultures of different countries, you may consider taking a honeymoon in Europe. You will certainly see a lot of various cultures there. There are a lot of historical sites such as the Stone Henge in UK. You may also visit Russia for a lot of interesting historical sites. However, one thing you have to bear in mind is that it will usually take you at least a month for such a trip. If you cannot really afford the time for this trip, you may need to go for other options. In fact, you may also consider traveling to places such as India. There are also a lot of historical sites and you can even spend a few nights in the palaces.

You should also need to think about the weather in the destination when you are deciding on the honeymoon destination. For example, there can be a lot of storms and typhoons in Hong Kong in June and July. You will need to alter your travel plan if you encounter such extreme weathers. As a result, if you cannot afford the time, you may not want to go …
